Good evening friends! We had a LONG day at the hospital today seeing the kidney doctors. They weighed Brianna in at 50 lbs., and measured her to be 4’2. She is a tiny girl because her kidneys have not let her grow properly. After reviewing charts and statistics with the dietitian, she suggested that Brianna start taking daily growth hormone shots for several years! You should have seen Brianna’s face! Poor child looked scared to death to hear she may have to get a shot every day! We were already there today for her to get an Epogen shot to increase her red blood cells because she is highly anemic. She also had her blood drawn to test her Creatinine level again. She did remarkably well and we should have those results in a few days. Her blood pressure was at a good level so I guess her medication is working well. Woohoo!
As far as the growth hormone shots, I need to do some research. The doctor is supposed to email me information and wait for my decision. I asked if they would need to be started right away, or if she can start them in a year or two. She just said that Brianna would lose out on 1-2 years of growth that way. Is anyone familiar with this? When does it end??? I am 5’2 and her dad is 6’1 so I figured she might turn out to be around 5’4 or so since she is on the short side anyway. The doctor said that looking at her growth pattern, she may not get above 4’9 if she doesn’t take the hormone shots. Hmmm. What to do, what to do!
Many of you may know that Brianna’s dog broke her leg in December, one week after we got her, by jumping off a chair. She has been in a cast ever since and today she got her cast removed and is now in a bandaged splint. I guess that’s progress. Poor little doggie. The veterinarians are amazing at Broadview Animal Clinic and we are very grateful to them!
Things may have gone a little awry, but we can thank God that things are not any worse than they are!
