{"id":111,"date":"2010-07-17T19:48:13","date_gmt":"2010-07-18T03:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/"},"modified":"2012-01-26T08:18:18","modified_gmt":"2012-01-26T15:18:18","slug":"musculoskeletal-system","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/site\/cancer-topics\/late-effects-of-treatment\/musculoskeletal-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Musculoskeletal System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bone<\/p>\n<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the bones.<\/p>\n<p>Bone late effects may include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bone pain.<\/li>\n<li>Joint stiffness.<\/li>\n<li>Weak or thin bones that can break easily.<\/li>\n<li>Decreased amounts of calcium in bones.<\/li>\n<li>Decreased bone and tissue growth in treated areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain factors increase the risk that bone late effects will occur.<\/p>\n<p>The following may increase the risk of bone late effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being female.<\/li>\n<li>Being older at the time of treatment.<\/li>\n<li>Having low levels of estrogen or growth hormone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Risk may also be increased in childhood cancer survivors who received either of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Radiation therapy, especially to the head and spine.<\/li>\n<li>Steroids, such as dexamethasone, with cancer treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bone late effects may be caused by treatment for certain childhood cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for these and other childhood cancers may cause bone late effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).<\/li>\n<li>Central nervous system (CNS) tumors.<\/li>\n<li>Bone cancer.<\/li>\n<li>Wilms tumor.<\/li>\n<li>Osteosarcoma.<\/li>\n<li>Soft tissue sarcoma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Body weight<\/p>\n<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect body weight and cause obesity.<\/p>\n<p>The following may increase the risk of obesity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being female and having received treatment at age 4 years or younger, with high- dose radiation therapy to the head.<\/li>\n<li>Being young at the time of treatment (the younger the child, the greater the risk).<\/li>\n<li>Being slender at the time of diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li>Having an increase in body fat at an earlier than normal age.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Obesity may be caused by treatment for certain childhood cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for these and other childhood cancers may cause obesity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).<\/li>\n<li>Brain tumors.<\/li>\n<li>Hodgkin lymphoma.<\/li>\n<li>Non-Hodgkin lymphoma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Web site of the National Cancer Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.cancer.gov<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><code>[ad code=1 align=center]<\/code><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bone Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the bones.
