{"id":114,"date":"2010-07-17T19:51:22","date_gmt":"2010-07-18T03:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/"},"modified":"2012-01-26T08:19:01","modified_gmt":"2012-01-26T15:19:01","slug":"late-effects-of-treatment-thyroid-neuroendocrine-system","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/site\/cancer-topics\/late-effects-of-treatment\/late-effects-of-treatment-thyroid-neuroendocrine-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Thyroid &#038; Neuroendocrine System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the thyroid.<\/p>\n<p>Thyroid late effects may include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hypothyroidism (not enough thyroid hormone).<\/li>\n<li>Hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone).<\/li>\n<li>Goiter.<\/li>\n<li>Lumps in the thyroid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain factors increase the risk that thyroid problems will occur.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of thyroid late effects may be increased in childhood cancer survivors who received either of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Radiation therapy to the head and neck.<\/li>\n<li>Total-body irradiation (TBI) as part of a stem cell transplant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The risk may also be greater in females and may increase as the amount of time since diagnosis gets longer.<\/p>\n<p>Thyroid late effects may be caused by treatment for certain childhood cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for these and other childhood cancers may cause thyroid late effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).<\/li>\n<li>Brain tumors.<\/li>\n<li>Hodgkin lymphoma.<\/li>\n<li>Head and neck cancers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Neuroendocrine system<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the neuroendocrine system.<\/p>\n<p>Neuroendocrine late effects may include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low levels of pituitary hormones, including growth hormone.<\/li>\n<li>Early puberty (especially in females).<\/li>\n<li>Late puberty.<\/li>\n<li>Disorders of the hypothalamus.<\/li>\n<li>Pituitary gland problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Childhood cancer survivors who received a stem cell transplant with total-body irradiation (TBI) have an increased risk of growth disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Their risk is affected as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low levels of growth hormone are more likely if the survivor:\n<ul>\n<li>is female; or<\/li>\n<li>received radiation therapy to the head before the transplant; or<\/li>\n<li>received TBI in a single dose instead of divided doses; or<\/li>\n<li>had graft-versus-host disease; or<\/li>\n<li>received busulfan and cyclophosphamide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Adult height that is shorter than normal is more likely if the survivor:\n<ul>\n<li>is male; or<\/li>\n<li>received the transplant at a young age; or<\/li>\n<li>received TBI in a single dose instead of divided doses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Neuroendocrine late effects may be caused by treatment for certain childhood cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for these and other childhood cancers may cause neuroendocrine late effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).<\/li>\n<li>Central nervous system (CNS) tumors.<\/li>\n<li>Lymphoma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Web site of the National Cancer Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.cancer.gov<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><code>[ad code=1 align=center]<\/code><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the thyroid.
