{"id":119,"date":"2010-07-17T19:54:53","date_gmt":"2010-07-18T03:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/"},"modified":"2012-01-26T08:17:34","modified_gmt":"2012-01-26T15:17:34","slug":"late-effects-of-treatment-lungs-kidneys","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/site\/cancer-topics\/late-effects-of-treatment\/late-effects-of-treatment-lungs-kidneys\/","title":{"rendered":"Lungs &#038; Kidneys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the lungs.<\/p>\n<p>Lung late effects may include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shortness of breath.<\/li>\n<li>Cough (chronic).<\/li>\n<li>Pulmonary fibrosis (the build-up of scar tissue in the lung).<\/li>\n<li>Pneumonia (chronic).<\/li>\n<li>Inflamed lungs or pleura.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain factors increase the risk that lung problems will occur.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of lung late effects may be increased in childhood cancer survivors who had either of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infections or graft-versus-host disease after a bone marrow transplant.<\/li>\n<li>Lung disease, such as asthma, before cancer treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Risk may also be increased in survivors who received any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Certain anticancer drugs, such as bleomycin or doxorubicin.<\/li>\n<li>Radiation therapy to the chest.<\/li>\n<li>Stem cell transplant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lung late effects may be caused by treatment for certain childhood cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for these and other childhood cancers may cause lung late effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).<\/li>\n<li>Hodgkin lymphoma.<\/li>\n<li>Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.<\/li>\n<li>Wilms tumor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Kidney<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the kidneys.<\/p>\n<p>Kidney late effects may include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Renal tubular acidosis.<\/li>\n<li>Fanconi syndrome.<\/li>\n<li>Kidney failure.<\/li>\n<li>Hypertension (high blood pressure).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain factors increase the risk that kidney problems will occur.<\/p>\n<p>The following may increase the risk of kidney late effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having cancer in both kidneys.<\/li>\n<li>Being young at the time of treatment (the younger the child, the greater the risk).<\/li>\n<li>Having a genetic syndrome that increases the risk of kidney problems, such as Denys-Drash syndrome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Risk may also be increased in childhood cancer survivors who received any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Certain anticancer drugs, such as cisplatin, carboplatin, or ifosfamide.<\/li>\n<li>Certain antibiotics or antifungal drugs.<\/li>\n<li>Radiation therapy to the kidney or areas near the kidney.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kidney late effects may be caused by treatment for Wilms\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 tumor and other childhood cancers.<\/p>\n<p>The Web site of the National Cancer Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.cancer.gov<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><code>[ad code=1 align=center]<\/code><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the lungs.
