{"id":134,"date":"2010-07-17T20:05:13","date_gmt":"2010-07-18T04:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/"},"modified":"2010-07-21T21:42:07","modified_gmt":"2010-07-22T05:42:07","slug":"late-effects-of-treatment-teeth-jaw","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/site\/cancer-topics\/late-effects-of-treatment\/late-effects-of-treatment-teeth-jaw\/","title":{"rendered":"Teeth &#038; Jaw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teeth and jaw<\/p>\n<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the teeth and jaw.<\/p>\n<p>Teeth and jaw late effects may include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teeth are small or do not      have a normal shape.<\/li>\n<li>The roots of the teeth are      short.<\/li>\n<li>Missing teeth.<\/li>\n<li>New teeth come in at a later      than normal age.<\/li>\n<li>The head and face do not      reach full growth.<\/li>\n<li>Tooth enamel is not normal.<\/li>\n<li>Salivary glands do not make      enough saliva.<\/li>\n<li>Tooth decay (including      cavities) and gum disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain factors increase the risk that teeth and jaw late effects will occur.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of teeth and jaw late effects may be increased in childhood cancer survivors who received any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Radiation therapy to the head      and neck.<\/li>\n<li>Chemotherapy to treat leukemia.<\/li>\n<li>High-dose chemotherapy with stem      cell transplant and total-body irradiation (TBI) to treat neuroblastoma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Risk may also be increased in survivors who were younger than 3 years at the time of treatment.<\/p>\n<p>It is important that childhood cancer survivors have regular dental checkups to help prevent or detect infection or decay.<\/p>\n<p>Teeth and jaw late effects may be caused by treatment for certain childhood cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for these and other childhood cancers may cause teeth and jaw late effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Central nervous system (CNS)      leukemia.<\/li>\n<li>Neuroblastoma.<\/li>\n<li>Hodgkin lymphoma.<\/li>\n<li>Head and neck cancers.<\/li>\n<li>Nasopharyngeal cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Web site of the National Cancer Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.cancer.gov<\/a>)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teeth and jaw Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the teeth and jaw.
