{"id":137,"date":"2010-07-17T20:06:38","date_gmt":"2010-07-18T04:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/"},"modified":"2012-01-26T08:15:18","modified_gmt":"2012-01-26T15:15:18","slug":"late-effects-of-treatment-liver-digestive-system","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/angelsofcourage.com\/site\/cancer-topics\/late-effects-of-treatment\/late-effects-of-treatment-liver-digestive-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Liver &#038; Digestive System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the liver.<\/p>\n<p>Liver late effects may include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hepatic fibrosis (an overgrowth of connective tissue in the liver).<\/li>\n<li>Liver failure.<\/li>\n<li>Portal hypertension.<\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis C infection.<\/li>\n<li>Permanent liver damage caused by veno-occlusive disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hepatic fibrosis, hepatitis C infection, and veno-occlusive disease can cause long-term problems.<\/p>\n<p>Certain factors increase the risk that liver late effects will occur.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of liver late effects may be increased in childhood cancer survivors who received any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A blood transfusion before 1992.<\/li>\n<li>Radiation therapy together with chemotherapy.<\/li>\n<li>Chemotherapy with thioguanine to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Risk may also be increased in survivors who had liver disease before treatment or developed veno-occlusive disease during treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Liver late effects may be caused by treatment for certain childhood cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for these and other childhood cancers may cause liver late effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).<\/li>\n<li>Neuroblastoma.<\/li>\n<li>Wilms tumor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Digestive tract<\/p>\n<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the digestive tract.<\/p>\n<p>Digestive tract late effects may include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ulcers.<\/li>\n<li>Bowel perforation (a hole in the intestine).<\/li>\n<li>Pain in the abdomen.<\/li>\n<li>Inability of the intestine to absorb nutrients from food.<\/li>\n<li>A narrowing of the intestine.<\/li>\n<li>Blocked bowel (chronic).<\/li>\n<li>Infection.<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhea (chronic).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These effects may be caused by damage to the blood vessels, which may lead to long-term problems.<\/p>\n<p>Radiation therapy to the abdomen may damage blood vessels and increase the risk of digestive tract late effects.<\/p>\n<p>Digestive tract late effects may be caused by treatment for certain childhood cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for these and other childhood cancers may cause digestive tract late effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma.<\/li>\n<li>Wilms tumor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Web site of the National Cancer Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.cancer.gov<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><code>[ad code=1 align=center]<\/code><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Childhood cancer survivors may have late effects that affect the liver.
